Eighty per cent of Queensland has been declared a disaster zone after the once-in-a-century rainfall.
Farmers that have been struggling for years with the ravages of drought are now facing an inland sea.
The mayor of the St George's Balonne Shire, Donna Stewart, has told the ABC there is likely to be no safe place in town when the flood water peaks.
"That's way above the 1890 flood height which was 13.1 metres so we're going into totally uncharted waters," she said.
Meanwhile in Charleville, residents are trying to dry out after copping their second flood within a week.
Courtnet Trenwith writes in The Age: "Emergency sirens blared once more in the south-west Queensland town, just a day after floodwaters had started to recede, revealing the damage of Monday night's deluge."
