ASIO has launched a new advertising campaign and website loaded with videos that give budding spies a sneak peek into the organisation.

Spokesman David Fricker says the agency is keen to dispel the myth of the covert agent working alone by day and throwing back martinis at night.

"It's nothing like a James Bond movie," he told the ABC's AM program.

The drive is focused on young inner-city latte sippers and Nova FM listeners using websites like Facebook.

That prompted Fairfax blogger John Birmingham to accuse the agency of recruiting "its next generation of spies from the idle wanker demographic''.

Intelligence officers can earn close to $80,000 annually.
