Last night, a deal was made that will see 400 billion litres of the rain that recently fell on Queensland flow to where it is most needed, South Australia.

The water will take around 6 weeks to reach its destination via the Darling and Murray rivers.

The Murray-Darling Basin contains over 40 per cent of all Australian farms and produces one-third of our food supply.

Yet there is still no agreement between state and federal governments on a permanent management plan for the system.

With the Murray providing up to 90 per cent of Adelaide’s drinking water at times, water rights are a major issue for South Australians, who go to the polls on Saturday.

And while Premier Mike Rann is claiming credit for the deal, Opposition leader Isobel Redmond says the water was already headed their way.
